What is tofu made of?
Tofu is comprised of soybeans, water and a curdling agent. Soybeans, the main ingredient, are very high in protein which makes tofu a great substitute for meat. It takes on the flavor of the spices and other foods that you cook the tofu with. What are the different types of tofu for? When you look for tofu at the grocery store, you’ll notice that it comes in different varieties. The two main categories of tofu are silken and regular, and each of those types comes in soft, medium, firm and extra firm. Silken tofu is softer and will fall apart if handled roughly (like during stir frying). Silken tofu is packaged in aseptic containers that don’t have to be refrigerated. It is sometimes packaged as Japanese tofu. Regular tofu is sold in a plastic container that has to be refrigerated. Silken and regular tofu should not be used interchangeably.
