What is TLA? How can I calculate how much TLA I will receive in Hawaii?
The Short Version: (Most hotels set their government rates at the max TLA rate) Temporary Lodging Allowance, or TLA, is designed to pay for your hotel while waiting for government quarters or looking for a house. You are eligible if you are traveling with dependents, or the BOQ/BEQ is unable to provide you a room. The BEQ on Kaneohe Bay has not yet been in this position. It is approved in maximum of 10 day increments by the housing office, with 60 days being the maximum allowable. If you are eligible, the first ten days are automatic. For each additional 10 day period you need to get TLA approval. It is only approved if you are “aggressively house hunting” or government quarters will be assigned to you within that period. After your initial 10 days, each period you must turn in a form to the housing office of the houses you looked at, and the reasons they were not acceptable. TLA is calculated based on the perdiem rate for the duty station. The maximum allowable rate is figured by mult
