“The best event in the world” for the 31st October is back on 6th avenue this year for the New York City Village Halloween Parade, as it celebrates its 36th anniversary. Over 50,000 costumed participants take to the streets with approx. 2 million spectators. This year’s theme for the celebration is ‘Terra Incognita’, which means ‘part’s unknown’ or area that has not been discovered yet. The phrase dates back to pre 19th century maps along with other meanings which translate as ‘here be dragons’. The phrase was removed from maps and alike after the previously unexplored parts of the globe were explored. The parade was started by a local mask maker who on Halloween took his children out for a parade with family, friends and the neighbourhood in 1973. The second year running, the Theatre of the New City picked it up, and decided to produce the even on a much larger scale to make it what it is today.
