I had not heard about this situation until I read this Bonus Question, so once again–I’ve learned some fascinating local history thanks to the BQs. What happened is that the remains of some Native Americans are going to be re-buried in the city of Muskegon, Michigan, in their proper resting place once again. They were dug up many years ago, and the remains were given to the Muskegon Museum somewhere around 1940. The museum stored them, but didn’t display them all these years. The museum attempted to identify them, due to the Repatriation Act in 1990. It mandated that museums determine the provenance of burial items that would be of importance to native people. They had no luck at identifying the remains, as they appeared to be older than 1600, which classified them as “precontact” with Europeans.
