What is this I hear about adelgid resistant hemlock trees?
The Hemlock woolly adelgid poses a major threat to the Eastern and Carolina Hemlocks native to these Blue Ridge mountains. Steps have been taken to control this pest including predator beetles, and soil and trunk injections but there is still a high rate of mortality. Chambers Land Management is now selling trees that have shown to be less susceptible to the woolly adelgid. Multiple species are available. Some are from the Pacific Northwest of the US while others are native to the Far East. These trees are recommended as replacements for landscape trees and hedges as well as canopy cover for streams.
