What is there to do on the island?
Isle Royale is the only National Park in Michigan and only one of two island National Parks. It is designated a wilderness park and as such, 99% of the island must be maintained as wilderness. One-percent of the park is developed: Rock Harbor, at the northeast end, which features a lodge, duplex cottages, gift shop, restaurant and grill, a small store, Visitors Center, and other amenities; Windigo, which is at the other end of the island features a snack bar and Visitors Center. There are over 165 miles of foot trails and numerous of inland lakes and fjord-like harbors perfect for boating, canoeing, and kayaking. The island is also an educational experience for young and old. At some campsites, the rangers provide a nightly lecture about Isle Royale and the very delicate balance of nature it hosts. One of the most researched wildlife balances in history is that between the wolves and moose populations on the island.
