What is Their Role in Biomedical Informatics?
The terms data, information, and knowledge appear frequently in biomedical informatics definitions, papers, methods and theories. Although these concepts appear central to Biomedical informatics, the terms are often used interchangeably, and rarely defined. The definitions that have been offered are often vague, ambiguous, or contradictory. In this talk, I argue that a clear working definition of data, information, and knowledge is central to understanding, defining, and conducting the science of informatics and biomedical informatics and that the lack of such a definition has resulted in a pronounced lack of focus and scientific progress in the field. I show how a general view of data, information, and knowledge, developed by philosophers, can help us define and refocus the field, shifting the field from computer applications in biomedicine to a science of biomedical information.
