What is the worst religious event in American History?

I can think of a bunch for Europe, the crusades, the 30 years war, the witchcraft trials which killed thousands, the religious wars after the Protestant reformation. For America the worst thing I can think of is the witchcraft scare at Salem, and the deaths of all of 20 people. I’ve always thought that this was a major reason why America is so much more religious then Europe. A: The Jonestown Massacre. 909 members of the People’s Temple committed a mass suicide and a U.S. Congressman was murdered. Even that was surpassed with the events of 9/11.
