What is the worst natural disaster that you have lived through?
Hurricane Andrew, August 24, 1992. That storm damaged our home in Homestead, Florida to the point of it being a total loss. We were able to salvage about one-fourth of the possessions contained inside because it was a relatively dry storm. The closest I could find a rental truck and storage for what was salvageable was 100 miles away in Boynton Beach. The nightmare of the aftermath was worse than the nightmare of the storm itself. Thanks to all of the military personnel who came down to provide us some security and order. We stayed in the community and helped in the rebuilding. My wife was pretty much in charge of supervising that. I continued working (luckily my job’s location was not seriously damaged because it was far enough north to be out of the most severe winds. I also volunteered to help some secondary school science teachers – substituting for them so they could get some things done. I purchased a 25′ travel trailer and my wife, two children, and I lived in it in the driveway
