Amazingly, an abstract, painted in the 1940s, is the most expensive painting that has ever traded hands for cash. $140,000,000! The Mona Lisa has not traded hands in decades. The last time it traded for cash it brought 4,000 écus in 1516. That’s about $200,000 in today’s money. The Mona Lisa today is close to priceless. If somehow it ever became available for sale I think it could bring a billion dollars. No joke.
