What is the work like for marine biologists and other zooligsts?
A marine biologist studies marine life and there is a wide variety of things that they might study. For example quite a few are involved these days in studying the effect of fishing on various fish stocks around the world; others work on coral reefs others work on plankton some on whales. Those are just a few examples. Other zoologists work on the a similarly wide range of animals on land, anything from the tiniest nematodes in the soil to the largest mammals and birds. If you want to go into research then you need a good degree and then study for a PhD. You can choose what interests you once you get to PhD level, but if you see yourself working on mammals or birds then competition for for PhD places is fierce and only those with the best first degrees get these posts. These are science jobs and so you need to be interested in science. If you want a hands-on job with animals then this is not the right area. Zoo keeping jobs for example are not usually taken by zoologists.
