WHAT IS THE WISCONSIN RETIREMENT SYSTEM AND HOW DO I BECOME ELIGIBLE?
The Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) is a program where money is set aside each pay period and invested in the retirement plan. The intent of the program is to provide a retirement income for long-term employees of between 50% and 85% of their pre-retirement gross earnings. Long-term employment is considered to be 25 – 30 years of service or more. After one year of employment, an LTE’s hours will be monitored. We look at the person’s total hours worked in the past 12 months. If at least 600 hours of service are generated in that 12 month period, the person becomes eligible for Wisconsin Retirement System. When an LTE has more than one appointment, each appointment must pass the coverage test on its own unless the appointments begin on the same date. After one year, the monitoring will begin and all hours will be summed during the “look back” period. If the hours are 600 or more, the person is covered.
