The rule of thumb is that as long as you are comfortable sitting on outside reading a newspaper then a retractable awning will be fine. If it is too windy for you to do that then you should simply retract the Awning to storage position to not have any damage.

A good rule of thumb to use a Retractable Awnings is: As long as you are comfortable sitting on your Deck reading a Newspaper, the Awning will be fine. If it is too windy for you and you leave your deck simply retract the Awning to storage position.
