Salt! Some of our redwood has absorbed so much salt from its pickle brining days that, once sawn for WoodWalks, it excretes salt. That’s the white residue you see. It is completely harmless, for plants and animals. Salt residues can be brushed off with a damp cloth. Exposure to weather will also rinse off salts.
