The Bishop Guertin girls’ lacrosse team is one win away from its first state championship. It will play Bow for the Division II title Thursday (5 p.m.) at Southern New Hampshire University. And presumably the Cardinals are just one win away from something else – having the “R” word associated with their program. Ah yes, recruiting. Can you win or challenge for a state title in any sport at Bishop Guertin High School and not hear the word mentioned? It was certainly around in the mid-1980s, when then Bishop Guertin basketball coach Tyler Page was building what looked like a mini-dynasty. The Cardinals won the Class L title in 1983 when one of the best players in state history, Skip Barry, was a junior. They would play in the final again in Barry’s senior year, but lose to Portsmouth. And when two prominent players from Merrimack and Londonderry transferred to BG as sophomores, the protests were loud and clear.
