What is the web-safe color palette?
The web-safe color palette is a set of 216 colors that are consistent across all video display devices, operating systems, and browsers. At a minimum, a user would be using an 8-bit color resolution to view pages on the Internet. An 8-bit color resolution (a function of the video card) allows for the viewing of 256 colors. Forty of these 256 colors vary between the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. That leaves 216 consistent colors (256 minus 40) available to anyone viewing a web page. Why should I use colors in the web-safe palette? The colors in the web-safe color palette are the colors that should always be available to all images, regardless of the user’s video display device, operating system, or browser. Using web-safe colors guarantees that everyone viewing your web page will view it in the same way. Web-safe colors appear solid (non-dithered), even on a 256-color display.
