What is the weather like?
The San Francisco Bay Area coastal weather is generally pleasant and temperate year round. Winters are often rainy, and summers can be very changeable, with fog in the morning and sun in the afternoon. Your summer day could begin in fog at 50°F (10°C), and the afternoon could change to bright sunshine and 90°F (32°C)! See seasonal average temperatures and rainfall , but be aware that these are just averages, and your experience could be very different!
The weather in the West Alps is similar to that of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. One can experience several days of beautifully clear skies or be plagued by storms. However, late July, August and September is generally the best time to climb in this area, for reasons of weather and snow conditions. By bringing the proper clothing we will be prepared for all types of weather. The enclosed itinerary is designed with some allowance for bad weather but may require further alterations. We will attempt to adhere to the schedule as closely as possible, but our goal is to have a safe, fun climbing trip. Some flexibility is important for the smooth operation of the program. The guides will be open to input throughout the trip.
Ecuador is on the equator. Lower elevation areas will be hot and humid, like Guayaquil which is near the coast, while higher up areas where Cuenca and Quito are located will have both sunshine and rain most days. The temperature in Cuenca varies between 60º and 80º and you will want to wear a long sleeve shirt and a thin coat which you will want to take on and off throughout the day as the temperature changes. In a nutshell it never gets either too cold or too hot here in Cuenca.
The Dominican Republic has 27 climate zones so weather can vary from desert-like conditions to rain forest conditions. The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, so temperatures are generally quite warm throughout the country all year round. Some have even called the weather here ‘the endless summer’. There are slight variations between the summer and winter months. The so-called ‘cool’ or winter season, runs from November to April. The humidity is relatively low during these months and it tends to cool down in the evenings much more than in the summer months. The coastal/beach regions generally experience highs of around 28C (83F) during the day and lows of about 20C (68F) in the evening. The mountainous interior of the country is considerably cooler, and on the highest mountain peaks the thermometer can sometimes drop below freezing point. On rare occasions frost can even be seen on the top of these peaks. The summer season in the Dominican Republic runs from May to October. Average
