What is the viscosity of Mercon ATF?
There are several different viscosity ratings, such as API gravity and Brookfield viscosity. But, true Mercon V has tigher requirements than previous iterations of Mercon fluid and Dexron/Mercon blends. It also uses friction modifiers that are not present in previous Mercon formulations. And, I am a bit leery of using Dexron/Mercon “universal fluids” on vehicles that call for Mercon V to begin with. It’s kind of like using Dexron VI, which is a GM fluid, on a vehicle that calls for 7176 ATF+4, which is a Chrysler fluid. Plus, Ford has indicated in a technical service bulletin that Mercon V should be the fluid used in all applications that call for Mercon fluid of any kind. So, basically, if your car calls for Mercon, use Mercon V spec fluid from a reputable manufacturer, preferrably a formulation that is totally synthetic as opposed to being a synthetic blend or a non-synthetic fluid. I’d recommend Amsoil synthetic ATF.
