Veteran employees often take a cut in pay upon their transition from the military to a new-hire federal employee. The monthly education benefit payments they receive are intended to supplement the veteran’s income as they make the transition to a new career.The Department of Veterans Affairs offers an education benefits program to eligible veterans who are in trainee status in training that comprises a condition of employment. This program provides monthly benefit payments to qualified veterans during the period of time that the veteran is in basic training and while in on-the-job training status (OJT).
