What is the VAX Mail Utility?
You can use the VAX Mail Utility to send and receive text e-mail messages. Type MAIL at the dollar sign prompt to enter the Mail Utility. Notice that the Mail Utility has its own prompt: MAIL> Type HELP at this prompt to learn more about the Mail Utility commands. Type EXIT at this prompt to exit the Mail Utility and return to the DCL dollar sign prompt. Your mail messages are organized within folders. Messages that you have not yet read are kept in a folder called NEWMAIL; messages that you have already read are kept in a folder called MAIL; messages that you have deleted are kept in a folder called WASTEBASKET until you exit the Mail Utility. These folders pop in and out of existence as needed. For example, if you do not currently have any unread messages you will have no NEWMAIL folder. And, if you do not have any old messages (perhaps because you deleted all of them) you may see a message that says: %MAIL-E-NOTEXIST, folder MAIL does not exist.
