As with most powertools that feature a variable speed control, it allows for greater range of applications the tool can be applied to. A common application would be for polishing furniture or even your car. By fitting a lambs wool or imitation lambs wool bonnet to the platen, you would slow the speed of the tool down top avoid any damaging heat build up.
