What is the value of “self-managing” ones career/ What are the concerns?
Hi, Paly – interesting question. The value of self-managing is that you are in charge and are the person making the decisions. Since we should know ourselves better than anyone else, this should translate into better decisions. I think there is also a psychological “boost” to one’s ego from being the decision-maker. However, not everyone is comfortable with making their own career decisions. In my experience, this relates to a weak self-concept – in other words, the person does not trust their own ability to make good decisions and is probably afraid of the responsibility that comes with being in control. I agree with Josh – no one else is going to manage your career, in most situations. However there are people who will make decisions for you (at a cost) about your career. This is NOT the same as managing your career, because they risk nothing by telling you what to do. To sum up, I really see no actual negatives to self-managing. The worst possible outcome is that you choose poorly –
