You’re given a very low dose to begin with. The dose is slowly increased to a standard level. Dosage should be individualized for maximum beneficial effect. The manufacturer does not recommend taking more than 4 mg/day unless being treated for panic disorder. The maximum recommended daily human dose of alprazolam is 10 mg/day. For insomnia, these medicines may be used only when required or every few days (e.g., alternate nights). When used to treat chronic disorders like panic disorder, phobias or some of the other anxiety disorders, they are often used safely and effectively for long periods of time. When stopped, the dose is always slowly and gradually reduced. It is suggested that the daily dosage of alprazolam be decreased by no more than 0.5 mg every three days. For standard dosing instructions, dosing in special populations, dose titration, maintenance and reduction, see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION.
