The United States minimum wage is the lowest hourly wage that can be paid to most employees. It is set by federal law and covers virtually all workers who are engaged in commerce within the United States.The minimum wage is currently $6.55 per hour. This rate became effective on July 24, 2008 when the minimum wage increased from $5.85 per hour. On July 24, 2009, the minimum wage will increase to $7.25 per hour.
