What is the UN doing to encourage Pakistan to open the border?
UNHCR continue to put pressure on GoP to open the border and allow UNHCR / GoP to receive refugees. GoP have stated that they will allow ‘the most vulnerable’ across, which will therefore involve a screening process; this is unacceptable to UNHCR as they will have to determine who gets across and who doesn’t – and therefore go against their mandate of assistance to all those in need. It is further complicated by the fact that it is UN Security Phase IV at the border which hinders UN agency movement.
