What is the U.S. policy on dual nationality?
Current U.S. nationality laws do not explicitly address dual nationality, but the U.S. Supreme Court has stated that dual nationality is a “status long recognized in the law” and that “a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both.” Since July 1, 2001 Sweden allows dual citizenship. American citizens residing in Sweden who are interested in applying for Swedish citizenship should refer to our information on Dual Citizenship. Information on the application process for Swedish citizenship can be found on www.migrationsverket.
