What is the typical make up of a Planning and Environment lawyer’s client base?
As the work we do is so varied, so is our client base. We act for developers seeking to obtain planning permission for their new project – maybe a hotel, office or shopping centre. We also act for them on environmental matters – perhaps they have an issue with some contaminated land or need advice on the sustainability of their development. It is one of the perks of the job to see a development you have worked on up and running. We act for a wide number of corporate entities, normally assisting on the planning and environment elements of the due diligence process of a transaction. More recently, we have been advising large companies (especially those with extensive real estate portfolios) on their compliance with various statutory measures which the Government has introduced in an effort to reduce carbon emissions, notably the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.
