What is the Turkish currency?
The Turkish Lira (TRY) comes in coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Kuruş, a 1 lira coin, and notes of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 lira. As of July 2010, 1 euro converts to about 1.96 TRY, and 1 USD is at about 1.56 TRY On January 1, 2005 the old Turkish lira was converted to a new Turkish lira at a rate of 1,000,000 old to 1 new Turkish lira; on January 1, 2009, the government dropped the Word “new” and the currency is now simply called the Turkish lira. They say it’s usually cheaper to exchange money once you arrive in Turkey, or just use an ATM to withdraw in Lira. And if possible, keep small-denomination notes on you when you go out, because many places don’t carry change for large bills. Also carry coins with you to enter public restrooms.
