What is the truth about Lye?

0

You will notice Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) listed as an ingredient on our labels. We get many questions about why we use lye in our soaps. The truth is you can not make true soap with out it! We all know what happens when you combine oil and water together…You just get oil and water, am I right! Lye is the key ingredient needed to bind oil and water together to produce soap. While the use of lye is a fundamental part of the soapmaking process, a properly made batch of soap will no longer contain lye. Due to the scientific reaction, the chemical composition is now SOAP! Ever notice that you don’t see lye listed on your store bought soaps? The scientific name for for an oil saponified by lye looks something like this: Tallowate (Tallow), Palm Kernelate(Palm Kernel oil), Cocoate (Cocoa Butter)etc. Yep, it’s true even your DOVE & IVORY bars can not be made with out it!
