What is the treatment for corticosteroid (betamethasone) withdrawal syndrome?
She should have been weaned off but the symptoms you describe are not really typical of discontinuation of steroid use. Usually there is muscle and joint pain. It sounds more like your mother has congestive heart failure, therefore low salt, diuretics and treatment for that. They could put her back on the 10mg(that is really not a very high dose) and then try to wean her off and see if it helps but I don’t really think that her symptoms are typical of discontinuing the Bethamethasone. Insomnia would be more prevalent while on the medication, not off. She needs a no salt diet, exercise program that she can handle and cardiac medication. Hopefully she has had all the blood tests for congestive heart failure and an Echocardiogram. She may have Pulmonary Hypertension which is from the COPD. I hope she has been tested to see if she needs oxygen as that can be the cause of all of these things. She needs to be under the care of a Cardiologist to titrate the meds she might need.
It will settle in some time but restrict her salt which has been retained in her leading 2 oedema due to prolonged use of corticosteroid, get her blood sugar checked, serum sodium done, her bone too will be weak and there are also chances of getting peptic ulcer n GI bleeds. In the future inhalers will be better than oral.
