What is the Transient Accommodations Program?
A The organization reached out to hotel proprietors across the country to alert them to the Hurricane Katrina special transient accommodation program. This program is a “ramped up” version of the American Red Cross hotel housing program that chapters across the country offer everyday to those affected by the more than 75,000 disasters Red Cross responds to a year. The American Red Cross is covering hotel lodging costs of Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Red Cross chapters outside of the affected areas are facilitating accommodations and, inside the affected areas, the organization is being billed directly. Evacuees being housed in hotels by the Red Cross are people who evacuated to hotels and have exhausted, or are close to exhausting their personal resources. As of September 5, an estimated 54,000 people in 46 states have been assisted through this program.
