What is the traditional use of Salvia Divinorum?
To the Shamanic healers living in the mountainous Sierra Madre Oriental in the northeastern corner of the Mexican State of Oaxaca, Salvia is a traditional medicine they still use to this day. These Spanish healers referred to as Curanderos; or in Mazatec cho-ta-ci-ne (“one who knows”) use Salvia in situations where they feel it is necessary ‘to travel into the supernatural world in order to discover the true cause of the patient’s trouble’. They use it in a ceremonial manner to induce a visionary trance state, where they try to determine the cause and remedy of a hidden disease. Also used in occasions where someone has lost something to determine the circumstances and whereabouts of missing objects.Fresh leaves are preferred and are consumed orally; either by chewing the leaves or drinking a tea like infusion of the crushed-leaf juices.
