What is the Town of Markham doing about West Nile Virus?
The Town of Markham will support the Region of York Health Services Department to control West Nile Virus by participating in surveillance, source reduction and public education, and by enacting Standing Water ByLaw_2003-122 ( 26k/3p). The Town of Markham has also initiated several enhanced approaches to control West Nile Virus; Windmill Powered Aerators Storm water management ponds provide an important water quality benefit as well as a diverse habitat supporting many species of wildlife including birds, frogs, fish and beneficial insects. These ponds also contribute to the life of the community by providing open spaces for relaxing and walking. In 2004 12 windmill powered aerators were installed in 12 of the over 50 storm water management ponds located in Markham.
