The Town of Markham has also initiated several enhanced approaches to control West Nile Virus; Windmill Powered Aerators Storm water management ponds provide an important water quality benefit as well as a diverse habitat supporting many species of wildlife including birds, frogs, fish and beneficial insects. These ponds also contribute to the life of the community by providing open spaces for relaxing and walking. In 2004 12 windmill powered aerators were installed in 12 of the over 50 storm water management ponds located in Markham.
