What is the third stage of labor?
The third stage of labor takes place soon after you have delivered your new baby and involves the delivery of the placenta and membranes which have been nourishing and protecting your unborn child for the last 9 months. The third stage is the shortest stage of labor and generally lasts only 15-20 minutes. Contractions will be weaker and labor pains not as severe as the previous stages. Exhaustion is the most common problem! The excitement of holding the new baby often eases women through the delivery of the placenta, although many find that they are tired out by the time the baby has been born, and find it difficult to summon up the energy to deliver the placenta.
