As the New York City Village Halloween Parade celebrates its 36th anniversary during a year of economic turmoil and uncertainty, organizers have chosen the theme “Terra Incognita.” This year’s parade will capture the dread and excitement of sailing into the darkness of unknown waters. Parade puppeteers Superior Concept Monsters will transform 6th Avenue into a churning sea of billowing silk tides and a flotilla will sail above the waves. Fantastic and frightening creatures will swim beneath the surface. Are you ready to dive into these terrifying waters? The Village Halloween Parade began in 1973 when a local mask maker organized a neighborhood walk for his children and their friends. After the second year, Theater for the New City stepped in and began producing the event on a larger scale as part of their City in the Streets program. New York’s Village Halloween Parade is an annual holiday parade and street pageant presented the night of every Halloween (October 31) in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Stretching more than a mile, this cultural event draws two million spectators, fifty thousand costumed participants, dancers, artists and circus performers, dozens of floats bearing live bands and other musical and performing acts, and a world-wide television audience of one hundred million. Among the parade’s signature features are its pageant sized puppets — giant rod puppets “articulated” by teams of puppeteers — and its open participation to anyone in a costume who wishes to march. It is the largest public Halloween event in the United States, and the country’s only major night parade. New Yorkers are highly excited about their 36th Annual Halloween Parade. The parade is going to start from 7pm on October 31, 2009 and its going to be an absolute blast. The famous sixth avenue in New York City will again be light up with glitz and glamour. Everyone’s invited to join the fun. Police has strictly asked interested participants to enter the rout from the south and the east as the streets west of 6th Avenue will be closed off. NY1 local TV is all geared up to cover it live and exclusive. Ney Yorkers are already to show off their spooky, crazy and outrageous costumes. Participants spend weeks to prepare their costume and themselves for the occasion. This year’s theme has been set for “Terra Incognita”.
