What is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program?
(Return to Questions) The TANF Program is a federally funded block grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It is designed to provide temporary assistance for needy families to care for dependent children in their own homes or in the homes of relative caretakers. TANF furnishes financial, medical and support services such as child care, transportation and other services for families that are unemployed, underemployed or unable to work. Federal law allows a five-year lifetime limit for receipt of TANF benefits.
