We aim to encourage learning through problem solving exercises. As part of the 2006 changes we are attempting to break down the barriers between the existing civil engineering disciplines such as structural engineering / fluid mechanics and trying to place civil and environmental engineering in a broader context. We aim to encourage learning through problem solving exercises. Indeed the very first week or two of most of the programmes (with the exception of H201 for which this happens at the start of the second year) starts with a conceptual design and build exercise. Recent themes have included making machines to accurately measure a minute and gadgets to travel across a surface including a large gap.
