What is the symbolism of large maroon stars on buildings?
There is an extensive history of the use of painted symbols (including the five pointed star) in the Pensilvannia Dutch Hex symbols which has been traced back to symbols painted on barns, out buildings, taverns and home in Europe. These have been documented to go back at least to the early 1600s. The Symbolism in these hexes vary with the painters and the regions they are found in, but most symbolise the protection of the heavens.
