There are literally thousands of unrelated families called Williams, because William was one of the commonest given names in medieval England and Wales; so when people started taking surnames thousands of them simply called themselves Thomas Williams( that is, “William’s Thomas”) . Crest and coats of arms belong to individuals, not unrelated individuals who just happen to have the same name.
