What is the Superfund Research Program (SRP)?
The SRP, federally funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and administered by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (an institute of the National Institutes of Health), was created in 1987 when Congress passed the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA). The SRP is a university-based program supporting basic science research programs that link research related to human health effects with related research on engineering, hydrogeology, and ecology. The primary objective of the SRP is to understand the human health and environmental risks associated with hazardous waste sites in order to clean up these sites to minimize public health concerns.
