What is the student union?
A. The Student Union is both a student-centered organization and a building. It is the center for community and leadership on campus. The FAU Davie Student Union provides an on-campus home for students, faculty, staff, and guests who seek cultural, social, business, educational, and recreational experiences in an environment committed to excellent service.
In order to achieve the greatest possible contribution to our community, we endeavor to make efficient and effective use of the resources available, to communicate student convictions clearly and willfully to faculty, administrators, and trustees, and to achieve consensus within the University community on formulation and execution of policy. -from Preamble to the Student Union Constitution The student union is the composition of the representative body for undergraduate students at the University of Notre Dame. The following is a brief description of each of the organizations which comprise the student union. There are two branches within the Student Union: the Policy Branch and the Programming Branch. The Executive Policy Board governs the actions of the Policy Branch. Student unions are the hubs of student life at UK universities. At most US universities, no umbrella organization oversees both activities and student services. But in the UK, unions – run by students, for students – provide a one-stop shop for all needs: from giving advice on accommodation or finances to organizing sports and arts clubs and from running student pubs to planning city clubbing nights. At the union, students can get practical advice on such topics as finances, academic concerns, accommodation, job searches and immigration. Unions also provide resources on mental health issues, safe sex and alcohol awareness. Large unions act as drop-in advice centers and often employ full-time staff, while smaller unions rely on volunteers and, at the very least, have information resources. The CSSD Student Union consists of the Student Union President and 14 departments which are each run by elected student volunteers. The Student Union President is a sabbatical officer who is elected by the students and paid by the school to manage the 14 departments and support and represent CSSD students within CSSD and beyond.
The student union (Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss –AStA) at the University of Applied Sciences Aachen (FH Aachen) is your advocacy group at university level. We constantly strive to improve the conditions of our students’ studies. In addition to our versatile services, our information meetings and cultural events, you’ll get the latest news about student life and the university itself. The AStA is elected by the Student Parliament (Studierendenparlament -SP). The SP is the students’ highest decision making body and is elected by all matriculated students of the FH once a year.
