What is the structure and function of golgi body?
It is composed of stacks of flattened vesicles the sides of which are bulged. Golgi complex is generally localised and lies at the apical end of the cell, being close to the nucleus. In nerve cell it perinuclear. Golgi complex condenses proteins that are synthesized on the ribosomes. These newly synthesized proteins come to the Golgi zone and while passing through the cisternae, they get condensed and packaged into the zymogen granules. Carbohydrate moiety is added to some proteins to make them glycoproteins and this is done by the Golgi complex. Hence, Golgi complex helps form the overcoat of the plasma membrane. Lysosomes also develop from the Golgi complex.
