What is the story behind the epigraph by Sol Kelley-Jones?
Sol is the daughter of two lesbian mothers. She is a long-time activist for peace, justice and equality. Her words at the beginning of Families Like Mine are quoted from her acceptance speech for receiving the Wisconsin chapter of NOW’s Young Feminist of the Year Award in 1998 when she was eleven years old. (A few grammatical updates were made to the quote with Sol’s permission.) Sol is a Point Foundation scholar at Hampshire College. In 2004 she received a Brick Award from Do Something.
