What is the status of women in Saudi Arabia?
I do not think women have many rights in Saudi Arabia. They cannot vote. They need a male escort to go anywhere. They cannot drive a car. There are divided areas – like apartheid – where only men are allowed and only women are allowed. They can open bank accounts only if their husband permits them. And per Quran, if a father dies, daughters get only a small fraction of his wealth, with the majority going to sons. However, strangely enough, I have heard that it is the Saudi women that hold themselves back. I talked to a wealthy young woman here in the US and she told me that she does not mind anything and does not see any problem with the current situation because she is so pampered as men always have to take care of her and she does not have to work and does not have any responsibilities. I could not believe that anyone would like this situation, but I guess money makes a difference. I think that the wealthy may say so, but the poor women, which are likely the majority of Saudi women,
