What is the status of study of metallurgical engineering in Indian colleges/universities?

It is pretty bad. There are no takers for metallurgical engineering or materials engineering in India nowadays. It is quite obvious going by the number of colleges in India who offer this as a discipline. While I do not know the exact causes for such decay, it is clear that there are more opportunities for engineers doing other subjects. If India is to grow economically, it has to produce good engineering materials, and for this we need a good workforce. There is therefore a need to train more materials engineers. However I do not see that happening and maybe the people from other disciplines are filling up the traditional role covered by the metallurgical and materials engineers. I can already see that happening in nanotechnology, where people from different disciplines have put their hands in “the pie.” There is need for metallurgical engineers and materials engineers to regain their sphere of influence.
