What is the status of irradiation for food in other countries?
The leading countries where irradiation of food products is used are USA, Canada and China to name a few. UN-FAO and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) identified more than 20 food irradiation facilities being planned, constructed or renovated in ten countries. The US has signed framework equivalency work plans with India, Mexico and Thailand, an action that will facilitate the introduction of irradiated produce from these countries into the US. Countries who are running the irradiation facility for food include, South America, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Thailand, India, Australia, China, Indonesia, Pakistan and South Africa. Many other countries including Vietnam and Nigeria are planning to install the facility.
