What is the status of access to the Gulf through the Colorado River jetties at Matagorda?

The Colorado River jetties are an experimental design, and the mouth of the Colorado River is currently severely shoaled. The Port of Bay City Authority is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a rehabilitation project that may involve construction of a new east jetty. Presently, the channel is only navigable to small, outboard powered vessels, and even then with extreme caution. Deep draft vessels should access the Gulf at the Matagorda Ship Channel near Port O’Connor, or at Freeport.
