What is the Standard Possession Order or SPO?
The Standard Possession Order or SPO is the default visitation schedule that the courts like to use. The SPO outlines regular visitation for weekends and times during the week during the school year and then also periods set out for holidays and the summer. The regular visitation is divided into two types – parents less than 100 miles apart and parents more than 100 miles apart. The distance affects how often and for how long the visits are. For example, parents less than 100 miles apart share the spring break period for the children by alternating years, but when parents are more than 100 miles apart, the visiting parent gets every spring break. Certain holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are unaffected by the distance between parents and will alternate every year regardless. Please consult an attorney for more details on the Standard Possession Order and whether it is a good option for you and your children.
