i would argue about ‘plot’ but themes and atmosphere etc are definitely part of genre. Most novels, including the genre of gothic, have some some establishment of an equilibium [where things are all ok], then it’s upset [disequilibrium] and then it gets sorted out at the end [resolution[ [Todorov’s theoy of narrative simplified] this may not be in order of chronology though in the novel – for example, Frankenstein is starting almost at the end, resolution, then back to the equilibrium then the upset and the main bulk then trying to resolve the upset… most gothic novels deal with aspects of identity, questioning science and religion in some manner and having a female characetr who is trying to prove herself in some manner.
