This is accomplished by linking water-quality monitoring sites to a digital stream network that describes the spatial linkages between sites (upstream or downstream). Digital stream networks provide information on streams throughout a region and usually break streams into segments (reaches) that vary in size depending upon the scale of the data set. Drainage boundaries are established for each stream reach and these boundaries are used to identify the contributing drainage areas to stream reaches.
